This painting of multiple glazes took more than a year to complete, including the time taken to allow for drying of each layer. The initial stages were spent on location drawing, then painting the under layer, I then completed the work in my studio at home in Wales.
I lived with a lovely Bedouin woman Umm Gersom, in the caves of Petra, who has sadly passed away now. I was given a camel of my own and I had the privileged position of being able to move around Petra when the tourists had departed. So I was able to see the Treasury (alkhizana in arabic) early mornings and evenings as well as during the day. I set up my easel working from morning to night, chatting to my Bedouin friends and other passers-by about the meaning of life. This painting for me was a creative journey into life.
